Some things are taken for granted, but perhaps it may be helpful for people to see actual evidence - even anecdotal.

For me, it helps - at work, at home, for martial arts, making repairs on the car or on the computer.

It's something my parents taught me from the beginning, and I've carried it through professionally. It is emphasized in school from elementary all the way through college level education.
